Today, we are announcing the planned sunset of Swellchain, our Optimism Superchain L2, in order to concentrate more fully on Faro.
Users must withdraw any funds from Swellchain before June 15, 2026, after which the network will be permanently shut down.
Swell remains fully operational, and rswETH, swETH, and SWELL on Ethereum are not affected.
Why we're sunsetting Swellchain
The blockchain landscape has evolved significantly since Swellchain launched. The restaking ecosystem has matured more slowly than anticipated, with several major projects adjusting their roadmaps, and improvements to Ethereum Layer 1 scalability and sustained low transaction fees reducing the urgency for certain Layer 2 deployments.
As a result, we believe the long-term opportunity lies elsewhere. Our focus is shifting to Faro, where we have the strongest product conviction and see the greatest potential for user adoption.
Continuing to maintain Swellchain would divert engineering and business development resources away from this priority. Sunsetting the chain allows us to concentrate efforts where they can deliver the most value.
What this means for SWELL
SWELL remains central to everything we're building. We're actively designing a status program that connects the token directly to Faro, rewarding holders and active users as Faro scales. More details to follow in the coming weeks.

How to withdraw from Swellchain
If you have funds on Swellchain, you need to bridge out before June 15.
- Unwind DeFi positions.
- if you have positions in Swellchain DeFi (Tempest, Ambient, etc.) unwind those first.
- Bridge your assets back to EthereumUse the Superbridge to bridge off Swellchain.
If you need further guidance, please open a support ticket in the Swell Telegram or by clicking the frog in the bottom right corner of the Swell app. Support will remain available throughout the withdrawal period.
Important: If you do not bridge your funds off Swellchain before June 15, 2026, recovery may not be possible. We strongly recommend initiating withdrawals as early as possible.
FAQ
What happens next?
May 5th. Deposits from Ethereum to Swellchain disabled.After this date, no new funds can be bridged into Swellchain.
June 15th. Final deadline to initiate withdrawals.After this date, we will disable deposits and the withdraw flow on our frontend, and stop supporting the bridge UI. The chain itself will continue running until June 30, so technically withdrawals remain possible via direct contract interaction, but this path is not recommended and requires technical expertise. Any withdrawals initiated before June 15 can still be finalized on L1 (7-day proof window applies).
What happens if I miss the deadline?
If you miss the deadline, you may not be able to recover your funds. Please withdraw in time.
What happens to SWELL?
SWELL is an ERC-20 on Ethereum. The chain sunset doesn't change that. Any future decisions about the token will be communicated separately.
What happens to rswETH and swETH?
Nothing. They continue operating as normal on Ethereum mainnet.
